How is digital health changing the way pharma generates real-world evidence?

From patient engagement to real-world evidence.

For years, the value of digital health in pharma has largely been framed around patient support: help patients understand their treatment; improve adherence; provide education between appointments; reduce the burden on healthcare professionals. These are important outcomes, and well-designed digital health solutions can deliver all of them.

But there is another benefit that is receiving far less attention. Every interaction within a digital health product has the potential to contribute to a deeper understanding of how therapies perform in the real world.

Why real-world evidence matters

Randomized controlled trials remain the foundation of regulatory approval, but they were never designed to answer every question. Once a therapy enters routine clinical practice, payers, clinicians, and pharma companies want to understand how it performs across broader patient populations, over longer periods of time, and in the realities of everyday care.

This is where real-world evidence becomes increasingly important. It helps organizations understand treatment patterns, patient experiences, and outcomes beyond the controlled environment of a clinical trial. For specialty care therapies in particular, generating this kind of evidence has historically been difficult, because treatment journeys are often complex and extended over many years.

Turning patient engagement into evidence

Digital health is changing how said evidence can be generated. A digital companion used consistently over time can create a rich picture of the patient experience through symptom tracking, patient-reported outcomes, treatment adherence, consultation preparation, and other interactions that take place between clinical visits.

Importantly, this only works when patients continue to find value in the experience. A patient who uses a solution for a few days generates very little insight, while a patient who remains engaged for months or years can contribute to a far more meaningful understanding of real-world treatment experiences.

That said, sustained engagement alone is not sufficient. The value of that data depends on how the solution is designed - whether it captures information in a consistent, structured way, and whether it is built to the standards that allow patient-generated data to be used in a clinical or regulatory context.

This is only possible when evidence generation is treated as a design objective from the outset - not a secondary benefit of patient engagement, but one of the reasons the solution exists.

The most successful digital health solutions recognize that patient support and evidence generation are not competing objectives - they are two sides of the same coin. When patients receive meaningful support throughout their treatment journey, they are more likely to remain engaged; and when patients remain engaged, they help create the insights that can improve care, strengthen the evidence base, and support future healthcare decisions.

The pharma companies getting the most from digital health are increasingly thinking beyond patient support alone. They are asking how digital products can contribute to a broader evidence strategy, how patient-generated data can complement clinical research, and how insights from routine care can help inform future clinical, medical, and market access decisions.

When generated consistently and at scale, this understanding can strengthen market access and reimbursement arguments, support post-approval regulatory commitments, and inform decisions around future clinical research. For pharma companies, it also creates a more complete picture of how a therapy performs across the patient populations that trials were never designed to represent.

That is why patient support is only half of the story. The other half is the evidence that becomes possible when patients stay connected.
